What would cause an evaporator to frost like this?

I bought a Dixie Narco 368 Pepsi machine off craigslist and fired it up when I got home. About an hour later I opened the machine to check the temperature and it was only mildly cool. I looked at the evaporator core and saw one side heavily frosted.

I took the cooling unit out today because I needed to clean the inside of the machine. I set it up on my work bench to clean and powered it on so I could take a picture and show you. I checked the entire length of the lines to look for kinks but found none.

The machine hasn't been used in several years so I'm leery it's a serious leak. Could it just need to be recharged?

Also, I understand exposing it to the humidity will cause frosting, I just did it to show you a picture of where it's frosting over. The fins are completely clean and it begins frosting immediately. Also, the lines on the left side are cool to the touch; but not as cold as the line that's frosting.

Any help is appreciated!

Soda Machine Compressor Frosting Heavy

Afx,
With heavy frosting usually your evaporator is a solid chunk of ice, enough to block air from passing through it. Your photo looks like normal frosting to me. I will assume that after hours of time cooling in the machine it gets really heavy frosting enough to block cooling. Heavy frosting can be caused by several things:

1. An air leak in the door or flap seal lets in humid air; the door needs to seal air tight and the flap door needs seal good. Check for a bent door or missing rubber seal. Also check for some gunk build up on the flap door/seal.
2. Low charge - only a refrigerator repairman can tell for sure, he can then re-charge it. But the cost might be more than buying another compressor (used $175-$200) on the web.
If this doesn't help you might want to read this post it's pretty in depth:

If neither of these help get back with me we will figure it out.

Thank you for the reply Daryl

Thank you for the reply Daryl!

I've been futzing around with it and decided to send it to an appliance repairman who works next to my brother. He said he if he doesn't find any leaks he'll refill it with r414 for $40!

Lets hope that works! Until I get it back I've been cleaning the hell out of the machine, it was quite gunked up.

Coil Frosting

Also you need to make sure the evaporator fans (the one or more inside the box) are running. They should be running all the time. If the fans do not run, or have gunk and run slow the poor air flow will result in frosting.
