How do I change the compressor in my soda machine?

OK! I did what you said and checked it out. And unfortunatly I need a new(rebuilt) compressor. Before I go and buy one can you tell me how to change/install a new compressor? How difficult is it?
thanks,
theRS

Changing a compressor fairly simple

Changing a compressor fairly simple and straight forward (on the Dixie-Narco machine shown its 2 bolts, 4 screws and the compressor plugs into the machine). Changing a Vendo machine's compressor is almost identical.

PLEASE NOTE: When installing the new compressor handle the freon tubes VERY CAREFULLY. Particularly the tubes connecting the evaporator to the compressor. (DO NOT bend, force, etc.) as the solder joints that hold/seal the tubes will not take much stress. If they spring a leak your compressor will be ruined. This part of the job you need to be CAREFUL doing!
That being said, let's get started!

SAFTY FIRST! Unplug the machine.
Open the door and that's the compressor and condenser coils you see in the bottom of the machine. Both of these are mounted on a base plate.(see pic)

Un-plug the compressor from the machine. (see pic)
unplug the compressor from the machine

Remove the 2 screws from the front that hold in the vend chute. (some models will have a third adjusting screw that will need to be removed) the back of the chute usually doesn't have screws, it just lays in there on top of the evaporator coils. (see pic)
remove 2 screws from vend chute

Slide the vend chute out and remove it. set it out if the way. (see pic)
remove vend chute

Remove the duct work (1 or 2 metal pieces) from around the evaporator coils.(usually held in with just a couple of clips, sometime screws). (see pic)
remove duct work

Remove the screws that hold the evaporator coils in place (usually 4 but sometimes some are missing). (see pic)
remove the screws that hold the evaporator

Remove the 2 bolts from the plate that holds the compressor and condenser. (see pic)

Remove the retainer that holds the freon tubes and wires together. (on some models it is a plastic piece that slides or snaps out, on others it will have 2 screws holding a small plate). (see pic)
remove the retainer that holds the freon pipes and wires

Slide out compressor/condenser plate (the lower parts) and evaporator coils(upper parts) at the same time. (see pic)

DONE!
done!.

Installation is the reverse of removal.
NOTE: When installing new compressor handle the freon tubes VERY CAREFULLY. Particularly the tubes connecting the evaporator to the compressor. (DO NOT bend, force, etc.) as the solder joints that hold/seal the tubes will not take much stress. If they spring a leak your compressor will be ruined. If you bend them to far they will kink and the freon will not flow, and your compressor will be ruined. If you are having trouble getting them into place SLOW DOWN. Also on some models additional pieces (plastic shrouds, wires etc.) may need to be removed or moved to be able to slide it back in easily, NEVER force it. Changing a compressor is not very difficult, BUT you must be gentle and careful.

Hope this was helpful.
